Even without major storm systems, May entered the picture on an active note, at least compared to prior weeks. Every day of this week produced tornadoes, except one. On May 5, a trough of low pressure was to bring a strong tornado threat to Nebraska and surrounds, but it failed to materialize.

Tornadoes were reported in 11 states, from the Plains to the Ohio Valley during the period. Many days were characterized by scattered activity, though several included a number of tornadic supercells.
