Tornado Climatology Tornado Maps

Map: July Tornadoes in the United States

The map above shows county-level impacts of U.S. tornadoes from 1950-2011 during the month of July. In this analysis, if one tornado crosses multiple counties, we have included it as an individual tornado for each county hit.

With peak tornado season increasingly behind us, we see July hotspots much less defined than prior months, but the northern Plains, and high Plains/Front Range, as well as portions of the upper Midwest remained favored in general. While much of the country faces increasingly smaller odds of tornado outbreaks of note, isolated spinups have been reported across much of the U.S. Some increase in tornadic activity related to tropical systems is also possible by July.

Weld County, Colorado led the way for July tornado impacts at 64. Adams County, Colorado is also at the top of the list with 47 tornadoes. The other counties rounding out the top five are; Washington County, Colorado with 41, Cass County, North Dakota with 36 and Campbell County, Colorado with 27 tornadoes.

Note: As upcoming months feature considerably lower numbers of tornadoes, we will not map them out in the same way for now.
