Tornado Chasing

Chasecation 2013 Day 15 – Heading Home

We have started our ~20 hour drive back to the East Coast today, with a total of six tornadoes (and two maybes) and some incredible storm structure to take away from our journey. In our time out, there were nine Moderate Risks issued by the SPC in the central U.S. during the 13 days we actually chased. It was truly an epic chasecation that will be difficult if not impossible to beat in any other two week period.

Before the chase yesterday, we did pass through Moore and took a look at some of the damage there. It was Ian’s and James’ first time seeing such that scale of damage firsthand (and only my second as far as tornadoes are concerned). It’s important to keep in mind just how powerful these things we chase are when you come upon a crumpled car and realize that the same could happen to you if you were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

We will keep going through our chasecation images and releasing them as we get through them. I hope everyone enjoyed tracking our daily ventures through the Plains! The 7-day forecasts will start back up on Thursday.

I would like to thank Ian and James for being awesome chase partners during our trip. We made an excellent chase team and we made the right decisions almost 100% of the time, and that’s all you can ask for.

Also, a special thanks to Amos Magliocco for his hospitality and for meeting up with us several times while on the chase. It was great to chat with him, toss ideas around and exchange tips throughout our chasecation.
